Team Teaching
What is team teaching?
‘…a group of two or more teachers working together to plan, conduct and evaluate the learning activities for the same group of learners.’
Goetz, 2000
Scoil Chiaráin actively engages in Team Teaching at every class level in the areas of Literacy and Numeracy. This allows all children to reach their potential in these areas. Each mainstream class is assigned a SET teacher, the Class Teacher and SET Teacher work collaboratively in areas such as reading, group work, spellings, writing, station teaching and numeracy work.
Guided Reading
“The ultimate goal of guided reading is to help children learn how to use independent reading strategies effectively”
(Fountas and Pinnell 1996:2)
Guided reading is 'small-group reading instruction designed to provide differentiated teaching that supports students in developing reading proficiency'. The small group model allows students to be taught in a way that is intended to be more focused on their specific needs, accelerating their progress. Guided Reading happens in Scoil Chiaráin in all classes at various times throughout the year. We use the Project X series and also novels when engaging with Guided Reading.
Why is Guided Reading Important?
• Enables teachers to learn about the processes involved in learning to read
• Provides a bridge to successful independent reading
• Provides lots of opportunities for children to read texts at appropriate level
• Enables teachers to critically evaluate and choose appropriate reading material
